Arcade Fire Join Fight Against AIDS

In a move to join the fight against AIDS, the Arcade Fire announced yesterday (Nov. 29) that they have donated their song “Rebellion (Lies)” to Bono and Bob Shriver’s (RED) initiative, Pitchfork reports. The tune, which will be used in campaign television and online commercials set to air this holiday season, was pulled from the Canadian collective’s landmark album, Funeral. “To some people this may seem crass and capitalistic, and I sympathize with that position,” blogged vocalist and songwriter Win Butler on his band’s website. “But in the first week of the campaign they have raised enough money for 10,000 women to have anti-retroviral drugs for a year…money and medication which wouldn’t have been there without a program like this.”

The (RED) initiative hopes to expand opportunities for all AIDS carriers by promoting disease friendly work environments, communities and government policies. The Gap, American Express, Converse, and Apple, among others, have licensed the (RED) brand and are currently selling (RED) products, from which a portion of all profits will be donated to support the global fight against AIDS.
