Beck Adds Special Guest to Hollywood Show

Father's Day might normally happen in June, but Beck doesn't care: He's turning a Sept. 20 gig at the Hollywood Bowl into a paternal celebration by collaborating on stage with his father, David Campbell, for the first time ever. A noted composer and arranger who has worked with everyone from Marvin Gaye to Cat Power, Campbell will conduct the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra Strings during his son's hometown gig.

Perhaps Beck has been inspired by his own transition into fatherhood. In SPIN's new cover story, Beck talks about career and family. "I thought when you had kids that there were all these things that were gonna have to happen: tell 'em about this or that, sit them down and play them music and show them what art is all about," Beck tells our John McAlley during a tour stop in Amsterdam. "But they come out singing. Before he could talk, Cosimo [age 4] had his favorite songs. And they weren't songs I played him."

And what, you may wonder, is on Cosimo's playlist? Gnarls Barkley, Joanna Newsom, and Bobby Darin's "Splish, Splash (I Was Takin' a Bath)," says his dad.
