Billy Corgan Just Started Writing the Smashing Pumpkins Album He Started Months Ago

Billy Corgan is taking a break from hocking furniture and serving tea to write the next Smashing Pumpkins record.

“Excited to announce today’s our 1st official day of writing new SP album,” Corgan tweeted Monday (March 25). “Wish us luck!”

This may be the first “official” day that the frontman and his hired guns bandmates are writing the follow-up to last year’s Oceania, but Corgan has been teasing the upcoming full-length for months. Back in September, Billboard reported that Corgan said he had “already started writing for a new album” that “definitely seems like it’s going to be more of a rockin’ affair.” Yes, Billy Corgan is actually quoted as saying “rockin’ affair,” let’s move on.

Of course, the 46-year-old “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” screecher added that he thinks making albums is pretty much a waste of time. “I think it’s a lot of energy for not a lot of return,” he said. “I mean, what are great sales today? At least back in the day, it was like a million, two million — at least people were listening to it. Now you sell 100,000, and for all you know two million people are listening to it but you don’t see it. You don’t get the reward for it. The business treats you like shit if you don’t do certain numbers. You can’t get played on the radio ’cause the guy in the nameless band is outselling you.” Always the underdog, aren’t you, Billy?

Soon after that, the Siamese Dream-er betrayed his reluctance to get back in the studio by telling MTV Hive, “I’m in my 40s, I should be making new music predominantly.” Corgan also said that he had a title for the forthcoming SP LP, but refused to share it. And he didn’t use the words “rockin’ affair” to describe said album’s still-gestating sound, but did say, “It’s going to be a cruel record. Vengeance is mine.”

More recently, during an interview with the Interesting People Talking About Wrestling podcast (remember: this is who Billy Corgan is now), the Pumpkins leader revealed, “We’re just starting to work on a [new] album now.” Corgan continued, saying that fans could expect the Oceania successor in early 2014 (via Loudwire).

So, despite allegedly having been at work on a new album for several months, Billy Corgan has just now begun working on the next Smashing Pumpkins record.
