Björk’s New Album Isn’t On Spotify Because of “Respect For The Craft”

bjork spotify comments insane respect

The way that Björk handled the exceedingly early leak of her most recent LP Vulnicura, by rushing it out on iTunes, suggests that the singer/producer is at least somewhat comfortable with the way today’s digital music economy works. But still, you may have noticed that the record hasn’t yet appeared on Spotify or other streaming services, and based on comments in an interview with Fast Company, it seems it won’t be showing up in those usual places anytime soon either.

After suggesting that her and her team were “making [the album release up as it goes” along, she said that she’s hesitant to engage with these services because “it just doesn’t feel right.”

“I don’t know why, but it just seems insane,'” She continued. “To work on something for two or three years and then just, ‘Oh, here it is for free.’ It’s not about the money; it’s about respect, you know? Respect for the craft and the amount of work you put into it.”

But Björk, being the innovator that she is, has solutions that extend beyond just pulling her music from the service. She suggests that a Netflix-equivalent for music might be a more sustainable model.

“You go first to the cinema and after a while it will come on Netflix,” She explains. “Maybe that’s the way to go with streaming. It’s first physical and then maybe you can stream it later.”

Interesting things to think about at the very least. For more about Björk, check out our recent roundtable about her catalog.
