On his solo acoustic tour, Chris Cornell has been performing stripped-back versions of songs from Soundgarden’s 25-year catalog. But at a gig in Edmonton, Canada, on April 26, Cornell surprised the crowd with a cover of Pearl Jam’s classic 1994 track “Better Man.” Watch fan-shot video of the performance here (via The Amplifier).

Cornell revealed to SPIN before starting that he was nervous about embarking on a solo tour. “It’s the most terrifying thing I have ever done musically,” he said, referring to a solo gig he played in Stockholm. But judging by this recent performances, Cornell seems to have warmed up to performing alone: His cover of “Better Man” is a faithful rendition, and it’s eerie to hear how similar his voice is to Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder.

Cornell next performs on April 29 in Victoria, British Columbia, before finishing up with a string of West Coast dates ending May 6 in San Diego. Check out the remaining shows at his official site.
