Coldplay Rock ‘Kimmel,’ Honor Amy Winehouse

Before they head to Lollapalooza this weekend, Coldplay performed Wednesday night at UCLA’s Tennis Center in Los Angeles. Portions of the show were broadcast on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and the band delivered national television debuts of new tunes “Every Tear Drop Is a Waterfall” and “Charlie Brown.” Chris Martin and Co. also remembered late singer Amy Winehouse by teasing her hit single “Rehab.” Watch video of the cover, plus a brief interview with Kimmel below.

Coldplay previously unveiled “Tear Drop” and “Charlie Brown” at Germany’s Rock Am Ring festival in June, but the Kimmel footage is of much better quality. As for the Winehouse cover, Martin offers up a stripped-back take on the tune, turning the soul rave-up into a solemn, organ-powered ballad.

On a lighter note, Kimmel’s pre-show interview with the band is pretty hilarious. The host ribs the boys – his first musical guest when the show started in 2003 – and wonders, “You haven’t been heard from since. What have you been doing for the last eight-and-a-half years?” “Will [Champion] works for FedEx and the rest of us run a pet shop,” answers Martin.
