Das Racist’s original members are reuniting … in the same building, at different times, and not as “Das Racist.” Heems is collaborating with New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art as part of an already in-progress exhibition called Blues for Smoke, which not only includes four installations created by the former DR member, but a live music series co-presented by his Greedhead label. The shows begin today (April 5) and extends through Sunday (April 7).
This evening’s stars include Das’ Kool A.D. backed by Amaze 88 and Loren Hell, plus a solo set from vogue-rap star Mykki Blanco — the event runs from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday’s festivities will include two live performances by psych-soul big band King Holiday, at 1 and 4 p.m. On Sunday, Heems, Dapwell (the third Racist), Greedhead up-and-comer LE1F, and psychonauts Prince Rama will play separate sets. There will also be a panel event called “Chillin Island Live.”
The latter is presumably an on-the-fly version of Dapwell’s freewheeling variety show, Chillin Island. Arrested Development actress Alia Shawkat, Will Oldham collaborator Matt Sweeney, rapper Mr. MFN eXquire, and performance artist Nate Hill will participate. And, as Pitchfork reports, Ratatat member Evan Mast will be drawing visitors’ portraits throughout the day. Access to the events and performances are free with paid admission to the museum.
