Congratulations! After their long climb through the echelons of indie rock--from humble beginnings in Bellingham, WA to more recent major label success--Death Cab for Cutie have finally hit the big time, securing their first-ever No. 1 atop the Billboard 200 chart. Since it’s release last week, their new record Narrow Stairs has sold 144,000 copies, trumping even Ol’ Blue Eyes as it pushed Reprise’s Frank Sinatra retrospective Nothing But the Best to No. 2.

Death Cab's last effort, 2005's Plans, was their previous high mark, debuting on the chart at No. 4 with 90,000 copies sold, and eventually spending 50 weeks in the top 200.

Elsewhere on the charts, singer/songwriter Jason Mraz's latest We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things entered at No. 3 with 73,000 copies moved, while Brit songstress Duffy's debut Rockferry placed No. 4 with 71,000 sold. Madonna's Hard Candy, which dropped April 29, descended from No. 3 to No. 8 with 53,000 copies moved.
