Clarence Clemons, saxophonist for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, suffered a stroke last night at his home in Florida, according to multiple sources, including ShowBiz411, which broke the story. The Associated Press also confirmed the news, citing an unidentified source close to Clemons. There is no additional information available on his condition, although ShowBiz411 reports that members of Springsteen’s band “were advised to get down to Florida as soon as possible.”
Clemons, 69, has battled a number of health problems in recent years. In 2008, he underwent back and double knee surgery. But the saxophonist recovered quickly enough that he was able to perform with Bruce Springsteen in a wheelchair for the remainder of a tour. Most recently, Clemons teamed up with Lady Gaga for her new album Born This Way, contributing sax solos to two tracks. UPDATE:The Bruce Springsteen fan site Backstreets reports that Clemons has undergone two brain surgeries but is currently responsive and in stable condition. “His vital signs are improving,” a close friend of Clemons told the site. “He’s responsive. His eyes are welling up when we’re talking to him…The next five days will be critical. But he’s a fighter.”
