Apologizing is never easy. And on “A Choppy, Yet Sincere Apology,” a tune off their fourth album, Underneath the Owl (out March 10, 2009), Austin, TX punks Riverboat Gamblers (No. 15 on SPIN’s 25 Best Live Bands list) aren’t making the process any easier — but they sure as hell make it sound good.

“Apologies from me / This is nothing that I want you to see,” vocalist Mike Wiebe howls, as a gritty guitar line and propulsive melody anchor the track. “I’ll probably snap out / But I just don’t know when,” he later admits — choppy, sure, but undeniably sincere.
