EXCLUSIVE: New Song from Circa Survive

Blue Sky Noise, the third album (and major label debut) from Philly rockers Circa Survive bowed at No. 11 on the Billboard charts earlier this year, and now they’re back with a brand new EP, Appendage, out Nov. 30. Hear the song “Stare Like You’ll Stay” below.

The five-song set features tracks that didn’t make the final cut for Blue Sky Noise – but singer Anthony Green assures SPIN that it’s not some tossed off collection of b-sides.

“When we were recording Blue Sky Noise, we recorded 16 songs, with the idea that it would be really cool to put out an EP out halfway through the record cycle,” he explains. “I know that the future of Circa Survive is definitely one where we want to be releasing new music as often as possible.”

Green says “Stare Like You’ll Stay” has been bouncing around with the band since they were recording 2007’s On Letting Go, and its rosier lyrical outlook and sprightly guitar attack feel more akin to that album than the heavier, angrier Blue Sky Noise.

“Every time I would hear that song – the beat, the melody, the lyrics – everything would just make me feel so incredible,” Green says. “The song’s about not taking for granted how awesome everything is, enjoying every second of it – it would have stuck out like such a sore thumb on Blue Sky Noise because the themes on that album were just a lot more pointing towards frustration and claustrophobia and fear and loss.”

The positivity and sunshine also mirror Green’s worldview at the moment: He became a father for the first time, five weeks ago, to a baby boy named James, and he’ll use time off in December to spend time at home and work on his second solo album, which he hopes to have recorded before heading out on tour with Anberlin in January.

He’ll be joined in the studio by his friends in fellow Philly band Good Old War. “It’s just so cool to be in a band with those guys,” says Green. “It’s such a different thing than Circa sometimes and it gives me a little bit of both sides.” Look for the album in late summer 2011.
