Bay Area punk band Green Day have announced a 38-date North American tour in support of their upcoming album, 21st Century Breakdown (out May 15). The summer outing, the band’s first in three years, will kick off July 3 in Seattle. The tour will hit major cities across the United States and Canada, before concluding on August 25 in Los Angeles.

The news follows several surprise warm-up shows in the group’s hometown, including last week’s tour sneak peek in Oakland, CA, during which Green Day performed their new album in its entirety and unveiled an elaborate stage set. One week earlier, they performed a 30-plus song set in a intimate, 500-capacity San Francisco rock club.

On tour, Green Day — frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, drummer Tre Cool, and bassist Mike Dirnt — will be joined by guitarists Jason White and Jeff Matika, and keyboardist Jason Freese.

21st Century Breakdown‘s first single, “Know Your Enemy,” was released last week. Listen to a clip of the song at Green Day’s MySpace page.
