Kanye West's Bonnaroo Debacle
Since its initial announcement, Kanye West's Bonnaroo headlining set has been troublesome to fans. West's slot, originally set for the Which Stage earlier in the day, was moved to the main What Stage at 2:45 A.M., reportedly to bolster his Glow in the Dark light show. But early this morning, as tens of thousands of fans amassed in preparation for the much-anticipated gig, Kanye was nowhere to be found, and his most devout waited, and waited, and waited…
UPDATE! Kanye responds to Bonnaroo incident!

Finally, after heckles and -- as one concertgoer states -- plenty of refuse being thrown onstage, West finally emerged more than two-hours late -- just before the sun began to rise. In the aftermath, chatter of West's show and -- more notably -- his disrespect for his fans, has spread like wildfire. And while some affirm the performance was worth the wait, most Bonnaroovians are upset, and for good reason.
"Many people paid money to go to this Bonnaroo festival just to see you, you've got to respect that!" said Evan, a Bonnaroo concertgoer addressing West. "It was the biggest disappointment of the entire Bonnaroo concert."
What happened? Let the fans explain:

He is such an ass. Unreal. Absolutely no respect for his fans or the other artists at the festival like Phil Lesh who had to cut his late night short because of this little baby. Grow up Kanye. You hate white people, but keep on wearing their clothes and stealing their beats. I hope you felt great playing your BIG TIME glow show as it was getting light out. God you suck.
I WAS THERE! Let me tell you, I really like Kanye's music, and I am normally defensive of him, but that was excruciating. Pearl Jam finished at 1:00, and we stayed to see Kanye. at 2:45, no Kanye. The Screen changed from "Kanye West up next" to " Kanye at 3:00" then "Kanye at 3:15" then "Kanye at 3:30"< that's when the crowed began to boo. My ass was numb, I was falling asleep, and decided I was going home. I live very close to the site, and the F*cking sun was rising when he finally went up on stage!!! I thought the whole point of changing from evening to 2:45 was so it would be darker.
I'm a fan of kanye, I think that his mouth ruins the talent he has sometimes. I was really looking forward to this show, especially with all the hype of the Glow in the Dark. I dont think anyone should be mad at kanye, it;s the stage crews fault, they were dickin around for 2 hours! However, kanye was a bit rude and could have apologized. The show was a MAJOR disappointment, it wasnt glow in the dark at all, just cheesy cosmic video backdrop and kanye talking to a computer!
amazingly enough kanye's set was one that i was really looking forward too. i had read so much hype about how amazing this glow in the dark show was i was really happy they moved him to a later time. i waited the entire time to see this glow in the dark show. i heard a couple different rumors about why it took so long and sadly all of them could be true. there was one about how kanye wouldn't play if someone else was still playing. to be honest ... not surprising. would anyone be surprised if any of the rumors they heard were true? no! because kanye has an ego that doesn't quit. sadly, his great "glow in the dark show" was a bust, because you can't glow in the dark when the sun is rising. not to mention only play for 1 hour, not even apologize for being so late, OR thank the people who stayed! i wish i would have gotten some sleep. or that there had been a riot.
i guess kanye's computer screen was a bit jacked when someone hit it with an open water bottle. maybe that evens it out a bit!
Kanye was a true disappointment. A good friend of mine encouraged me to stay up late to watch his show, and sleeping would have been a better use of my time. He phoned in his performance, put no effort into the audience and then left in an hour?? He has no respect for his audience, I have no respect for him.
All of the performers with class know that Bonnaroo is about the fans, not about their ego. Every signle performer, that again, has class, knows without the audience, they are nothing.
Kayne, you are a disappointment.
The glow in the dark set was a joke! We waited all night for that? You have no common sense if you spend good money on those toys you called a set.
TriciaI am so thankful to have a place to vent about this topic! I am a 45 year old mother of two boys, who talked me into going to the festival with them and their friends. We had a group of 15 people. Everyone was under 25, but me. I was the only person in our group who was really excited to see Kanye. But because their love for me, they all were troupers and went out with me in the middle of the night to hear him. They were all fired up to at least see the light show. We were aggressive and showed up really early to be front and center. OMG... I won't even bother to repeat everything that the other posts have already covered; his rudeness, his erogance, his laziness, etc. I can honestly say, that even if the light show had been amazing....it was a joke, even if he had started on time and had a full length show, it still would have been sooooo dissapointing to me. I honestly was Shocked that basically what we saw, was Kanye doing glorified rap karaoke. There was no live band, no back up singers, no dancers, no nothing, except him just rapping to tracks. Seriously, I was expecting a SHOW. It was shit. Also, WHAT the _____ was he wearing???! What happened to him? He looked out of shape and if the hair dresser rumor is true? Kanye, spend time this week to find a new one. If all had gone well, this was the weakest, most dissapointing show of the entire festival. The next morning, I saw a ton of people with signs and body art that said things like "F you, Mr. West", "Kanye sucks", etc., and whenever his name was mentioned at other shows, the crowd would erupt into booing. Wow! I was pulling for you Kanye. I overlooked all your previous bull shit, because I love your lyrics, and I love to dance to your beats. But you lost a ton of fans this past weekend, including this blessed middle aged mommy. Peace out! Whew! I feel better:)
I waited and waited for Kanye and when he finally came out it was the lamest shit I'd ever seen. He was talking to a stupid-ass space ship named Jane and I guess they had just crash landed or some shit like that. He needs to take all that to an amusement park for little kids who are into outer space. He should have come out with a straight up band and done his thing, instead he went way over-the-top and failed horribly. Kanye, I hope you and your dumbass spaceship Jane learn a lesson.
What a loser! I was there and I waited. And waited. And waited.... All of us were thinking "Well, we've waited this long, we might as well stay to see what's going to happen." When he finally came out it was the stupidest shit I have ever seen. He was talking to some computer voice that was supposed to be his space ship that crash-landed and standing in front of a computer screen. It was like something you would see at a carnival. It was basically glorified karaoke. This guy has zero talent, zero class, and zero respect for his fans. I have never seen so many people so pissed off at a concert. After about 10 minutes into the show about 80% of the people had left. On the other hand EVERY other show that I saw at Bonnaroo was amazing. It is a shame that this one show is probably going to be the most talked about thing that happened at Bonnaroo this year instead of the killer 3 encore Pearl Jam show or the amazing Levon Helm show. The people who organize the bands for Bonnaroo really need to think about their artist selections in the future and go back to Bonnaroo's roots.
PLEASE DIRECT TO MR. WEST:
I was pumped as F for Kanye's highly-acclaimed Glow-in-the-Dark show .. he was a huge reason I decided to go back to Bonnaroo again this year. I got myself hyped all weekend for his show and was glad that they moved his set time so that his performance wouldn't conflict with anyone elses and I wouldn't have to miss a blink of it.
Alas, I must ask this of you Mr. West:
What makes you think you're so great that you can push Phil Lesh off his rightful stage at Bonnaroo..and everyone else who was performing for that matter? What makes you think you're so fucking good that you can make your fans..your LOYAL fans.. excuse me.. DISGUSTED FORMER FANS.. wait until 2:45AM for your show...then push it back to 3:15...then 3:30....then 3:45...and then not even come on until 4:30AM in the damn morning for a "glow in the dark" show as the fucking sun was coming up (how does that even work, by the way?) Awesome. You need to get over yourself. You alienated a lot of people this weekend and it's a real damn shame. I think musically you're a great artist, but when it comes to respect for your fans, and CLASS...you have none of it, and that's where you differ from all of the other artists who were asked to play Bonnaroo, and whose fans paid a lot of money to see them. Don't wait until the ass-crack of dawn until every single other performing artist left the stage, packed up and went home so that you could claim as many people as you could and put all of the attention on yourself. Sorry to say but if that was your plan, it certainly backfired. For the rest of the weekend at Bonnaroo, I heard nothing but "F- KANYE WEST!" and boos directed at you.
I heard a lot of rumors about why Kanye West was so late. The sad thing is that the rumors weren't put to rest because Kanye didn't even apologize or address the crowd. Knowing that his fans were patiently waiting, he could've made some sort of announcement. The LEAST he could do was apologize and thank his fans for waiting TWO HOURS for him to come on stage.
Bonnaroo draws a crowd that gets stereotyped a lot - as I've noticed in some of the other blogs addressing this Kanye debacle. Stereotypes aside, Bonnaroo is a community of people who come for the music and the experience. The music and experience were dampened by the utter disrespect from Kanye. Maybe Bonnaroo isn't Mr. West's choice venue for performing..but the people he was playing to were there to watch him perform, and isn't that all any artist can ask for? A little repicrocal appreciation would be nice, 'Ye.
Total crap! The schedule was not changed so as not to conflict with Jack Johnson, Mr. West ASKED to be moved, onto the main stage, AFTER the headliner, Pearl Jam!!!! And he had the audacity to demand that all other performances be finished before he started! And don't jump on the stage workers - those guys work all day in blistering heat then have to accomodate prima donnas like this. The set was ready at least an hour before his Westness came out. Bonnaroo is about the music and the fans. If the show is all you've got, send it to Broadway.
If he released a direct media statement, not via any spokesperson or other source, with a LEGITIMATE and BELIEVABLE reason for his lateness and disregard for the audience, I might be willing to "give him a break." I've given him breaks lots of times. His music has usually been good enough, in my opinion, to forgive his larger-than-life ego, inappropriate racial statements, and holier-than-thou personality. That is WHO KANYE IS because that is what he shows the public, and most importantly his fans. He might need damage control and a re-evaluation of how he treats the people who make his life the "GOOD LIFE," his supporters and fans. I'm willing to give him another shot, but he really blew it. CASE CLOSED.
For all the mathematicians who want to blame Pearl Jam's lengthy set for Kanye being late, solve this formula: Pearl Jam went 40 minutes over its alotted time; Kanye came on stage 1 hour and 45 minutes later than he was scheduled for. Don't blame Pearl Jam for Kanye's lack of professionalism, or for Kanye's over-reliance on lazers and other props to “entertain” people. He's simply a worthless piece of crap, plain and simple, who has fooled many people into believing that he is somebody.
I would Never go see Kayne West At Bonnaroo. I was there I went to sleep because I really do not care for Kayne West! He has a Big head and thinks that he is almighty because he has won a few Grammy awards. Those Grammys suck anyway , its for people who wear hollister shirts and flip flops and Flop up their collared shirts. I am neither a Stinking Hippy or trendy indie rocker nor a frat pop nor an emo.. I enjoy good music and Kayne is not good I rather listen to Jay-Z at Glastenbury or some old school rap pharcyde, Tribe Called Quest. Even 50 cent. The Best band out there was My Morning Jacket by far then Pearl Jam... You couldnt even pay me 1 million dollars to Listen to Kayne west. He ruined Bonnaroo 2008, i hope people boycott his shows. He doesnt know how to treat his fans. Phil Lesh wanted to play a hour later but No Kayne wasnt about to play while anyone else was playing cause he only cares for himself.. So Kayne I hope those money stacks are good because you be doing commercials like MC Hammer in 10 years... You will Never have the longevity as a Phil Lesh, Widespread Panic, Robert Plant, Pearl Jam or Metallica. You are a fading star that will be laughed at Like Vanilla Ice and Millie Vanille.. Bottom Line you suck!! Trends Change and you will be counting your pennies soon!!
First, I would prefer to be called a Rooer rather than a Bonnaroovian. Thanks you.
Secondly, the only thing that i would complain about Kanye's preformance was the fact he only played for an hour and the whole 'Hi robot ****' was kind of lame. But i thought the music was solid, and the crowd loved it. Kanye is not a laughing stock like Vanilla Ice to the kid who commented below me. He isn't a one hit wonder such as MC Hammer or Ice. I believe Kanye's music is some of the best produced hip-hop I have heard in a while. It's some of the few artist I give props to that are on the radio.
AND
It's Pearl Jam's fault that Kanye got out so late. They played like 40 minutes+ into Phil Lesh which was like 30 minutes after they were suppose to end. If I were Kanye, I would be pissed he got screwed over like that.
I thought Kanye was an appropriate addition to the lineup and hope to see a similar artist on the lineup next year.
Get over it people. If you wanted to see him perform as much as I did then you were one that waited, despite the fact....& it was SO worth the wait if only you knew how to enjoy it. Now ****... I said goodday!
can you speak for 70,000 people? No.
I didn't want to see him... and I joyous walked by and laughed as he was booed of stage.
The dude is an asshole. I have never heard of a festival performing artist being so late to perform. Let's be honest... he stubbornly didn't want to play with other groups still performing so he chose to make the fans wait. He 100% deserved the hail of glow lights being hurled at him as well as the shots to get off stage.
Got something to say?
