My Morning Jacket Get Psychedelic in New Video

On their new album Circuital, My Morning Jacket offer up an ambitious set of tunes that recall the Who’s epic Quadrophenia, including the stand-out track “Holdin’ On to Black Metal.” The Kentucky boys have just released a video for that tune — and it’s a psychedelic fever dream that perfectly matches that track’s sprawling, gothic funk-soul vibe. Watch it here.

The clip — directed by Sole Solution Studios/Branjo Farms — is awesomely nightmarish, mixing rock-star paranoia themes of Pink Floyd’s The Wall with animation reminiscent of the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine. The plot seems to concern bassist Tom Blankenship as he goes on some sort of drug-fueled journey and stumbles upon the trippiest MMJ gig ever. In fact, it’s actually footage from their brilliant Bonnaroo set earlier this year, spiked with visuals of floating ghosts. Nice!
