In an effort to cloak his sound behind some mystery, Slow Magic always performs wearing a colorful animal mask of vague identity, and has never disclosed much information about himself. His music is just as curious. Since his 2012 Triangle LP, the masked beatmaker has revealed only two songs: “Girls,” and the just-unveiled “Hold Still.” On the second track, Beach House-d organ blends with bold synths and crisp handclaps, and, eventually, minimalist jazz-infused piano meets heavily pitch-altered vocals.
“Hold Still” will appear alongside “Girls” on Slow Magic’s upcoming album, How to Run Away, which is out September 9 through Downtown Records. For now, stream “Hold Still” below, scroll down further for the LP’s cover art, and pre-order How to Run Away on iTunes.
