Big-voiced singer Steven Tyler of Aerosmith confirmed that he’s been approached about joining the judges’ panel on FOX’s American Idol next season, possibly filling one of the spots vacated by Simon Cowell and Ellen DeGeneres.

“This beautiful girl from FOX came up to me and made an offer,” Tyler said yesterday on Kid Kraddick in the Morning, a syndicated radio show (via Billboard). “They mentioned it and I listened, and we’re on tour, so I gotta give it some time.”

“I would be honest to the ones that think they have it, and I would be truthful in the sense that if, to those that have it, they don’t have it yet enough,” he continued. “And I would tell them exactly why, as I see it.”

Tyler is just one of the stars said to be in the running for Idol‘s dais, joining Jennifer Lopez, Chris Isaak, and Jessica Simpson in the rumor mill. Cowell, one of Idol‘s creators, announced his departure during the show’s most recent season, but DeGeneres’ decision last week to leave the show after just one year was considered a surprise by TV insiders and fans alike.

Aerosmith kicked off their North American tour last week in Oakland, CA (read SPIN’s review), and it was their first U.S. show since August 2009, when Tyler injured himself in an onstage fall. In the aftermath, Tyler was nearly booted from the band after entering rehab for an addiction to painkillers.

Do you think Steven Tyler would be a quality judge on Idol? If not him, then who? Sound off in the comments.
