Terrific Twitter Trio of the Week

100401-twitter0trio.jpg

Lots of people tweet — but all that Twitters is not gold.

That’s why you’ll want to check out SPIN.com every Friday to see whose tweets we’re reading this week — then update your TweetDeck! (Obligatory Self-Promotion: …while you’re at it, be sure to follow @SPINmagazine!)

This week’s winners:

  • Dr. Dog
    @DrDogMusic

    Why You Should Follow: These Philadelphia-based psych-rockers are getting ready to release their sixth album, Shame, Shame, on April 6. In the meantime, they’re streaming the new tunes on NPR, playing crowded shows at music festivals, and goofing off in green rooms around the country. They often post Twitpics from the road, like this shot of a small-town menu item called “The Dr. Dog” and this picture from inside the band’s tour van. Bonus points: They just set up a new feature on their Web site called “Twinterview,”which allows fans to connect via Twitter or Facebook and ask the band questions. Dying to know their favorite U.S. city or what they put on their ice cream? Go ahead and ask — and watch out for their tweeted answers!

    Best Tweet of the Week: This photo of the band’s new stage backdrop, to be used during their upcoming North American tour.

  • Ben Folds
    @BenFolds

    Why You Should Follow: Don’t expect any grainy cell phone Twitpics from this singer-songwriter, who’s currently recording an album with British author Nick Hornby (when he’s not improvising songs about the people he encounters on Chatroulette, that is). Folds has a high-quality SLR, which he puts to use documenting his life, from recording studios and foreign cities to strolls on the beach and walks with the dog. Look out for diatribes about the use of Autotune in the music industry, tips for young musicians (“Read Salinger!”), and lots of communication with friends and fans. Tweet at him — you never know when he might tweet back (or write a song about you)!

    Best Tweet of the Week: “A proud morning as I awake to find ‘Ode To Merton’ got as many Youtube hits as ‘Ass Crack!!! Episode 19’ yesterday.”

  • Sia
    @siamusic

    Why You Should Follow: This Australian pop singer — whose fifth album, We Are Born, drops this June — is absolutely adorable on Twitter. Whether she’s posting Twitpics of girlfriend JD Samson’s grandmother (“the best nana ever”), ruminating about her favorite word combinations (“i rather like fuck bucket and jam sandwich”), or admitting to having eaten boogers, her tweets are often re-tweetable. Expect lots of talk of Bollywood-themed video shoots, animal rights (“please don’t buy puppies from pet stores.puppies from puppy mills’ parents are treated horribly and neglected and aren’t petted.adopt!”), and the fight for LGBT equality (“exciting news re gay marriage, al gore and bush’s old lawyers have joined forces to insist that the haters PROVE that it’s bad for society”). Bonus points: She and @jdsamson (who is quite the Twitterer in her own right) often exchange lovey-dovey tweets!

    Best Tweet of the Week: “i am fully excited xtina’s and my album come out on the same day. GIRL POWER! us feminists are gonna support the shit out of each other!”
