Here’s a sentence you wouldn’t have expected a decade ago: Trent Reznor is contending for his second Academy Award. The Nine Inch Nails frontman’s work with Atticus Ross on David Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is among the 97 feature-length film scores shortlisted for the next Original Score Oscar, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed. Reznor and Ross won their first Oscar in March for their score to another Fincher film, The Social Network, and their Tattoo score already has a Golden Globe nod.
The pair will once again be up against some stiff competition. Five-time Oscar winner John Williams has two scores in competition, for The Adventures of Tintin and War Horse, while past Oscar nominee Mark Isham has three in the running, for The Conspirator, Dolphin Tale, Warrior. Another previous nominee, Alan Silvestri, is up for Captain America: The First Avenger. Also eligible are all of the Golden Globe nominees for original score: The Artist (Ludovic Bource, Hugo (Howard Shore), and W.E. (Abel Korzeniowski), plus Tattoo and War Horse.
The final list of five nominees will be announced on January 24, with the awards ceremony to follow on February 26.
