Like Aerosmith and Metallica before them, Van Halen have been bestowed with their very own installment of the Guitar Hero video game series.

Guitar Hero: Van Halen is currently in production by the franchise’s developers, Activision Blizzard, and is scheduled for release in the second half of 2009. Activision has confirmed to Joystiq that the game will allow users to play along with Van Halen’s greatest hits, as well as songs from Queen, Weezer, blink-182, the Offspring, and Queens of the Stone Age, among others.

Which singer will the game feature — David Lee Roth or his later replacement, Sammy Hagar? “This is definitely Van Halen, not Van Hagar,” Activision’s Senior Vice President of Global Brand Management told Joystiq.

In addition to Guitar Hero: Van Halen, Activision Blizzard also plans to release two new titles this year — DJ Hero and Band Hero — as well as the fifth installment of the original Guitar Hero game.

Van Halen currently have no live shows scheduled, but Hagar and bassist Michael Anthony have teamed up with Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and guitar virtuoso Joe Satriani for a new supergroup called Chickenfoot. The band will release their self-titled debut album June 5. Meanwhile, Eddie Van Halen has unveiled his own brand of sneakers. Check ’em out here.
