WATCH: Amanda Palmer Covers Radiohead

Former Dresden Dolls singer Amanda Palmer has released an EP of Radiohead covers entitled Amanda Palmer Performs the Popular Hits of Radiohead on Her Magical Ukulele. It’s what fans of both Radiohead and the ukulele have been waiting for!

In all seriousness, though, the tiny, tinny instrument lends itself surprisingly well to Radiohead’s complex songs. With help from backup singers and the occasional appearance of other instruments (mainly piano), Palmer’s takes on hits such as “Idioteque” and “Fake Plastic Trees” are a credit to the caliber of both the original songs and her creativity.

The EP includes versions of “Fake Plastic Trees,” “High and Dry,” “No Surprises,” “Idioteque,” “Creep,” “Exit Music (For a Film),” and a special digital-only bonus track of “Creep” live in Prague. Hear the album version of “Fake Plastic Trees” below.

Tuesday night, Palmer celebrated the EP’s release with a live performance filmed in the singer’s living room and webcast via Ustream. After kicking off with a casual Q&A, she launched into an intense rendition of “Idioteque” that featured accompaniment from such diverse instruments as a stapler and what appeared to be a screwdriver. Watch a recording of the whole webcast below.

The EP is for sale online at Palmer’s web site for a minimum donation of 84 cents, and will soon be available through iTunes.
