WATCH: Flaming Lips Perform On 'Tonight Show'

Like a pants-wetting peyote trip… in song!

If the human bubbles, Christmas vacations on Mars, and vagina video treatments weren't odd enough, this new clip of the Flaming Lips performing "Watching the Planets" on The Tonight Show Tuesday proves the case: These Oklahoma natives are some totally freaky dudes!

The nearly-five-minute song, from the Lips' latest release, Embryonic, features a frenetic romp of pulsating bass, screeching guitar, and looping keyboard effects that's downright bonkers even by Lips standards. Wayne Coyne calls it: "Joy Division-meets-Miles Davis Group."

Coyne leads the charge, flopping on the floor, chanting, and thrusting his hand forward with Post-It notes attached to his palms that read "Yes" and "Oh Oh Oh!!!!!!" Meanwhile, a sideman slams a gigantic gong without pause. Whew, these guys' whole we're-from-another-planet, UFO shtick is becoming more and more realistic with each new song.

Is "Watching the Planets" totally out of this world? Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

OK, what was that about? Seriously, I was waiting for the talent part.

I watched it last night and maybe I would've enjoyed it more if I'd had some peyote.

If this had been on the old Gong show- the segment would have lasted 2 minutes- not five. Hopefully it's not too late to GONG!!!

I thought that was great.. trippy yes, but great tune and phenomenal performance!

Really, Berserk? It's just a normal Lips performance. Nice catchy tag line to get clicks. Spin has become the same as the enquirer. Enjoy the view spiraling down the drain.

Lame.

They were crap when they first showed up in the 90s, and they're still crap. How does this band keep getting record deals?

Anonymous

Sounds like a true 80's classic..I loved it!

this is a normal lips performance. nothing about this was actually crazy or berserk. thanks for wasting my time.. this song was actually kind of boring. zzzz

I think it's awesome! The Lips have always been experimental whether you like them or not. I think it's great they can make it big and still keep their edge. I can see why some would disagree, you won't like this song if you can't understand the Lips vibe, I love the trippy thing. I Love Conan and this band!

Hans

the Flaming Lips have been together since the 80's
they're not really all that "crap" either
White Stripes, Strokes...that flash in the pan crap that spawned a nation of wannabe hipsters on the other hand....

Hmmmmmmmmmmm! Sucks kinda fits!

Wow, they really suck!

The Flaming lips are awesome. I have been a fan since the early 90's and they never seem to disappoint. They are always fun and entertaining. If you are looking for experimental music and a great show check out one of their concerts. This is an amazing band. I still think that the Bunny suits were much stranger than this performance by far.

what the hell was that

Yeah that definitley wasn't berserk. C'mon, spin. Do you guys even listen to music? Let alone actual 'berserk' music'? The video was still awesome though, just not described very well.

I don't get what was wrong with it.

I liked it.

SPIN doesn't understand the Yeah Yeah Yeahs album. And now they can't wrap their heads around this album.

If the band does enough drugs, and the people at the magazine do enough drugs and the people at the record label do enough drugs and the people that get suckered in to to watching the clip do enough drugs......then it allll comes together...
If you're stone cold sober it just sounds like a bunch of people on drugs.....
Spin pretty much sucks, why I continue to subscribe to it is beyond me....
