Juliana Hatfield

Who? The former Blake Babies leader -- and sometime Lemonheads bassist -- who has maintained a fiercely independent, rough-around-the-edges attitude since kicking off her solo career with 1992's Hey Babe. Her 10th solo album, How to Walk Away, arrives Aug. 19 on Hatfield's Ye Olde Records, and also finds her as the subject of In My Room in the August issue of Spin.

What? An eight-date tour throughout major U.S. cities that kicks off on Sept. 9 in Washington, D.C. After dates in New York and Massachusetts (as well as a show with Canadian singer/songwriter Hayden in Philadelphia on Sept. 10), Hatfield will travel to the West Coast for a string of dates in Washington, Oregon, and California, ending on Sept. 27 in Los Angeles.

Should I Go? Yes. Hatfield's acid-tongued reputation and instantly quotable banter alone make for an unforgettable live experience; the sonic strength of her catalog -- both with the Blake Babies and on her own -- is also not to be missed. Plus, her considerable talent as a bassist -- check out her inventive figures on the Lemonheads' 1992 watermark It's a Shame About Ray -- has always been her strongest suit and most underrated quality.

Juliana Hatfield tour dates:

9/9, Washington, D.C. (IOTA)
9/10, Philadelphia, PA (World Café Live) (w/Hayden)
9/12, New York, NY (Bowery Ballroom)
