Kiss, 'Sonic Boom' (Kiss)
Rock elders in best-LP-since-Love Gun shocker!
By Doug Brod 10.09.09 12:41 PM
In the 11 years since releasing the patchy Psycho Circus, Kiss have marketed kaskets, opened a koffeeshop, and released krappy solo albums, apparently on a mission to make everyone but diehards forget that, for a few LPs running, they were the greatest rock band of the '70s. It's a breath of fiery air, then, that their latest is as close to a return to classic form as anyone could reasonably expect. "Never Enough" and "Stand," in particular, equal the anthemic might of "Rock and Roll All Nite," while "Danger Us" actually transcends its silly titular pun. The clichés (sorry, lyrics) otherwise define hoary, as backbones slip, things go out of the frying pan and into the fire, and hearts beat like drums. Nice to hear some things never change.

Alright Doug!!! YOU GET IT!!! Well said...of course SPIN was always pretty cool to KISS. Really, it's only Rock-n-Roll and yeah...they're over the top with the merch...but what it all boils down to is simple catchy R&R with a great live show to boot..and KISS although they may have stumbled on recent studio recordings...they bring it "back to the future" with Sonic Boom! and thats a real good thing....especially in the age of HoobaSTINK and NickelCrack.
Well there is no Walmart here (downtown Montreal)... I ain't gonna use my car to get there and guess what? I DON'T GIVE A FUCK! The Wal-Mart sellout was the worst thing...The biggest proof that Kiss doesn't give a shit about their fans!
This album is weak, even by KISS standards. Nothing, and I repeat NOTHING on here comes even remotely close to anything from the first seven studio LP's (yes, I'm including DYNASTY in there), and if I had to rank it I'd put SONIC BOOM below PSYCHO CIRCUS, REVENGE...jeez, now that I think about it this new CD isn't even as good as UNMASKED or THE ELDER. This is Peter's first solo album/CARNIVAL OF SOULS, even LIVE TO WIN bad.
Yuck.
A good little album. Not their best, but far from their (several) worst. I'm a KISS fan going back to 1976 and I'm pleased.
It's only KISS, ladies and gentlemen. Have some fun with it.
Those who are critical of KISS are forgetting the ups and downs this band has had. Gene and Paul racked their brains trying to keep the original line-up together. They needed this Walmart biz to compete with the download business. It's not a sellout. It's survival. Live with it. And have fun with it. After all-it's a pretty good album considering they used no outside help to polish it up like others do.
How can anyone bitch about the Wal-Mart "sellout" being not for the fans?!? FFS, the album is a ***3 DISC SET*** and comes with an import album, a live DVD, and a 20 page booklet, plus the new 11-track album (which ROCKS, btw)...for only $12!!! Not for the fans? Give me a break. Some people will never be happy.
LULASPAW is clearly an idiot! This is, by far, the best thing the guys have done in years. I have been keeping up with them for most of their 35 years, and yes they have done some really "corn ball" things. For some time now, it seems like what they have done is basically their interpretation of something someone else has already done. It just didn't seem original. This sounded like the old feel good R&R that put them on the map. Say what you want critics. Kiss drives cars that cost more than your houses!
Forget 1977, think 1973! A couple of Gene's tunes sound like they were held over from their first album...which is exactly what I wanted! As a fan of vintage KISS tunes like "Nothing to Lose" and "Let Me Know," I really appreciated "Yes I Know" and "Hot and Cold" and I'd go so far as to say that those two songs alone are worth the price of the whole CD set. Well done, KISS!
I think Modern Day Delilah and Say Yeah are the only two "good" songs, but there's definitely a throwback sound to the whole album. It's not great, but not horrible.
I agree with LULASPAW.....I have been a fan of kiss since day one and this album is an embarassment to the band and their fans. Lyrically and musically it is the worst kiss album I have ever listened to. Don't bother.....
I think the album rocks. I grew up with Kiss on vinyl and as a Kiss Army member since 1977 I am so hyped over this great new material. "Nobody's Perfect" is 100% classic Kiss, Short of having Peter and Ace, this is the best stuff since the original split up of the band. THANKS KISS, this lifelong fan loves the record!
People! you all suck; Sonic Boom is Damn Go and if you don't Think . Then Fucking die all ready.
People you suck, Sonic Boom is damn GOOD! If you don't think so then Fuckin die already! For the price you got alot. They could have charged alot more for it but they didn't!
Got something to say?
