Juliana Hatfield, 'How to Walk Away' (Ye Olde)

Alt-rock homecoming queen (finally) grows old gracefully.

"Don't take me for a woman," sings Hatfield in "This Lonely Love," from her ninth solo album. Despite the warning, a woman is exactly what Hatfield sounds like on How to Walk Away, as the 41-year-old former alt-rock heroine (and ex-Lemonhead) wisely trades her precious baby-girl coo for a grown-up delivery seemingly inspired by listening to Sheryl Crow's "My Favorite Mistake" a few hundred times. Producer Andy Chase (of Ivy) matches Hatfield's newly sensual vocals with cool, pop-rock arrangements long on juke-joint guitar and studio-cat keys. Surprisingly vital.
