A.C. Newman, 'Get Guilty' (Matador)

Man of a thousand melodies finds cold comfort in his skills.

"Few have the luxury of B-sides / I've got buckets full," New Pornographers singer- guitarist Carl Newman brags on "Submarines of Stockholm." Here, the Canadian power-pop ace unleashes another battery of hooks with blasts of vocal harmonies ("Like a Hitman, Like a Dancer") and dabs of organ ("Elemental"). But Get Guilty dwells on the past, and that pensive reflection mutes the second half, turning Newman's boast into a wistful memory. There are no careening pop juggernauts; just a couple of chords, high-hat to punctuate the high notes, and choruses sung in caps lock.
