The B-52's, 'Funplex' (Astralwerks)

New-wave icons dance this mess around one more time.
Sixteen years have passed since these Athens, Georgia natives last pondered love, sex, and outer space over untamed dance beats. Here, they refresh all their tricks, with stripped-down, energetic guitar plus lithe electronics. "Pump," "Hot Corner," and the title track use scampy rhythms that, in places, escalate into melodic headbanging as Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson harmonize with haute-Kmart verve. Other tunes are more refined, sometimes fusing melodies that could be from different songs, as on the freewheeling "Dancing Now." And as always, the B's manage to yell out nonsense like "Tell your skirt to take a hike!" and still remain cool.

I've been loving this new B-52s collection, their first since the early 90's Good Stuff minus Cindy Wilson. Boy, when you get these guys all together and don't rush it and let nature take it course, WOW, well this is what you get- a nonstop party rock dance collection that is so FRESH and undeniable CLASSIC B-52s all the way. So many strong cuts on FUNPLEX, I keep smiling listening to all of this. Thanks to Keith Strickland their guitarist and keyboard genius, and for hiring producer Steve Osborne and his crew they've created a futuristic, rock &new wave dance sound. With a smart fusion of their past styles thrown in with electronica and a nice modern sheen this is one HOT RECORD. As these guys wiggle through their 50's (can you believe it) SEX,SEX seems to be the undeniable feel good theme on FUNPLEX and as we all grow older they've made it a celebration of life, something you can't say with what we listen to out in the music world today. Highlights PUMP start this party off right with Keith Strickland's relentless garage guitar attack and the gangs one liners, a great take off song and future single? From there we navigate through the Bs world of Hot corners and fun mall plexes, deviant ingreidents and new dance grooves, from party shout outs and harmonizing from Kate and Cindy to Love tips for the year 3000 its all here, spacey fun for all generations of musical lovers, FUNPLEX looks to be a big highlight for 2008. Check out the youtube tom yaz video creation for dancing now, another album highlight. One of the best comebacks in years and right up their with their first and second classics and Cosmic Thing.

Shocker Shawn
