The Fall, ‘Your Future Our Clutter’ (Domino)

Steadily spewing cantankerous noise since the ’70s punk uprising, these Brits epitomize ornery independence. Frontman Mark E. Smith, the only constant over the years, shifts from inflamed tirades to the thrilling, albeit puzzling “Cowboy George,” where he mutters about “unseen knowledge” and “unseen facts,” and “Y.F.O.C./Slippy Floor,” which describes a “Spanish king with a council of bad knaves.” If the ranting occasionally suggests generic provocation for its own sake, Smith’s fury, amplified by the pounding grooves, is oddly uplifting — in moderate doses.
