Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions, 'Through the Devil Softly' (Nettwerk)

Ex–Mazzy Star siren throws slumber party.

"Is that the Devil in your eye?" It seems like a pressing question, but as Hope Sandoval asks it on "Blue Bird," she doesn't seem much interested in the answer. On her second solo effort, the Mazzy Star chanteuse waxes sleepy and resigned over 11 blue-tinted torch songs. A close listen reveals fine details, like the waterlogged, Eastern-tinged strumming of "Fall Aside" or the ghostly harmonies of "Blanchard." To most listeners, though, Through the Devil Softly will simply function as a collection of breathily perfect lullabies.
