YACHT, 'See Mystery Lights' (DFA)

A thinking geek's riff on wordy rappinghood.

Jona Bechtolt (formerly of the Blow) has released a clutch of indie-electro albums under the name YACHT, but on this DFA debut, he's joined by vocalist Claire L. Evans for all manner of Tom Tom Club–foolery. They tweak both T-Pain and rocksteady legend Desmond Dekker (on "I'm in Love with a Ripper" and "The Afterlife," respectively), and their deadpan lyrics debunk everything from gentrification ("It's Boring/You Can Live Anywhere You Want") to the hereafter ("Ring the Bell"). But the duo are most enjoyable when they just surrender to sweaty delirium on "Summer Song."
