Abe Vigoda, ‘Crush’ (Post Present Medium)

This quartet’s profile benefited greatly from the No Age–led national arrival of Los Angeles’ avant-rock scene and local DIY club the Smell, but Abe Vigoda now seem ready for a venue with a more advanced strobe-light rig. Their third album banishes the “tropical punk” sound they birthed in favor of smart, New Order–style dance-floor moping. Singer Michael Vidal owns his gloominess and the band delivers arrangements that are plenty tricky, but their arty ’80s excavation rarely finds the gooey, glittering choruses that would truly elevate their stylistic shift.
