Drake Owns BET Awards ’13 With Jaw-Dropping 12 Nominations

drake, BET Awards 2013

The BET Awards ’13 announced its nominees today (May 14), and Drake came away with the most nods by far, landing a total of 12 nominations. Cue “Started From the Bottom.”

The Take Care rapper is up for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist (against A$AP Rocky, Future, 2 Chainz, and Kendrick Lamar); has four entries in the Best Collaboration category (his appearances in 2 Chainz’s “No Lie,” A$AP Rocky’s “Fuckin’ Problems,” French Montana’s “Pop That,” and Kendrick’s “Poetic Justice”); five shots at Video of the Year (his own “Started From the Bottom” and “HYFR” clips will compete against his cameos in “No Lie,” “Fuckin’ Problems,” and “Poetic Justice”); and Drizzy occupies two slots in the Coca-Cola Viewers Choice Award group (“Started From the Bottom” and “Fuckin’ Problems”).

Kendrick Lamar, SPIN’s pick for Hottest MC in the Game, is tied with 2 Chainz for the second-most nominations — they each earned a respectable eight nods. A$AP Rocky pulled in five, while Jay-Z, Justin Timberlake, and Miguel each received four.

As for the ladies, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Tamar Braxton, Alicia Keys, and Elle Varner were all recognized in the Best Female R&B/Pop Artist designation. Nicki Minaj, Azealia Banks, Eve, Rye Rye, and Rasheeda are all squaring off for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist.

JT, Miguel, Bruno Mars, Usher, and Chris Brown are all duking it out for Best Male R&B/Pop Artist, while the Best New Artist trophy will be won by one of the following: Kendrick Lamar, the Weeknd, Trinidad Jame$, Joey Bada$$, and Azealia Banks.

The night’s biggest award, Video of the Year, has 10 potential winners: Drake’s “Started From the Bottom” and “HYFR,” 2 Chainz’s “No Lie,” A$AP Rocky’s “Fuckin’ Problems,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Poetic Justice,” Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Thrift Shop,” Miguel’s “Adorn,” Rihanna’s “Diamonds,” Justin Timberlake’s “Suit & Tie,” and Kanye West’s epic “Mercy,” which topped SPIN’s list of the 40 Best Songs of 2012.

Chris Brown and R. Kelly will take the stage as performers during the BET Awards ’13, and Chris Tucker will host. The event will broadcast live from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on June 30.

This year’s BET Awards will be the culmination of the first annual BET Experience, a three-day festival happening in L.A. from June 28 to 30. Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, R. Kelly, Snoop Dogg, Miguel, and the Roots are among the artists booked for the BET Experience.
