Final Fantasy

Who? Under the moniker Final Fantasy, Toronto-based Owen Pallett — a sideman with the Arcade Fire — looks to the eight schools of magic in Dungeons and Dragons to craft his sophomore record, a strangely lovely concept album entitled He Poos Clouds.

What’s the Deal? Final Fantasy’s theatrically breezy tenor frequently crescendos into a passionate yelp, creating drama suitable for the stage. In fact, it’s easy to imagine He Poos Clouds converted into a musical considering its tensely and cleverly strummed arrangements from a backing string quartet. Fantasy’s lyrics about self-destruction (“Do You Love?” examines the “scars of self-abuse”) and suicide (the heroine in “->” “dreams of being physically able / to behead herself at the dining room table”) ensure that the album’s adaptation would be into a beautiful tragedy.

Fun Fact: He Poos Clouds loosely translates to “my shit don’t stink,” Final Fantasy’s spokesman told Spin.com. “As in, if you pooped clouds, you’d be pooping, well, nothing.”
