Gerard Way Shares Cover of the Carpenters’ ‘Superstar’

Gerard Way, former frontman for ’00s crossover emo heroes My Chemical Romance, has long been teasing a cover of The Carpenters’ melancholy pop classic “Superstar,” recently unearthed from a decade earlier. “This specific recording was from the day I sang ‘Cancer’ for [The Black Parade],” he tweeted on Tuesday. “This track was a warm up, as I used to warm up to The Carpenters.” He’s now shared his version, which sounds like he’s singing over a bad karaoke rendering of the early ’70s ballad — still affecting, though, because “Superstar” never isn’t.

Listen here, and cue the clips of Ellen Page yelling “I bought another MCR album and it sucked, it’s just noise!”
