Dub Your Cassette Collection Onto an iPhone

Children of the late ’70s and early ’80s (plus mid ’90s-born retro fetishists) — your portable music player has arrived at last. The Ion Tape Dock, coming October 23, is essentially a Walkman with an iPhone/iPod dock attached to it, but what happens in between might as well be magic.

Pop in a sweet Def Leppard platter, New Jack Swing maxi single, or perhaps something from Leaving Records, then hit that button and voila! Those righteous reel-to-reel sounds are transferred to your mobile device as iTunes-accessible digital files, thanks to a conversion app that comes with.

The battery-powered Tape Dock will also connect to a regular old computer — Mac or PC — and can be used with headphones as a basic tape player. It’ll run $69.99 and, as Ion points out, its “portable design fits easily into your purse or backpack.” That’s great, but what about my fanny pack?
