Julian Plenti, ‘Julian Plenti Is…Skyscraper’ (Matador)

Interpol painted themselves into a sonic corner by album three, and though frontman Paul Banks doesn’t offer a clean break on his pseudonymous solo debut, he does brush in some new colors. Trebly Neil Young guitar and quavering synths define the ragged, sexy “Fly as You Might,” a Bloc Partyish urgency drives “Games for Days,” and “On the Esplanade” blends acoustic quietude, shivering strings, and distant sampled voices. Though modest, Skyscraper may prove to be an integral step in Interpol’s progression.
