As goodbyes go, Nine Inch Nails' farewell-to-touring concert on Thursday night at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles was an aural bear hug. Followed by a firm handshake, a high five and a rap on the cheek — the kind of prolonged, reluctant send-off you get from a man's man.

Being confined in a small dark room snout-to-snout with Trent Reznor and his music for two-and-a-half hours -- which was the case at Nine Inch Nails' "goodbye tour" show Saturday at New York City's tiny Bowery Ballroom -- is a rather startling experience for everyone involved.

Could the trend of musicians using Twitter starting to reverse? Probably not, but Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor said yesterday that after "experimenting" with social networking, he's ready to call it quits.

There's a thin line between being timeless and being dated -- and Friday night at West Palm Beach's Cruzan Amphitheatre, at the opening date of their 22-date joint U.S. tour, Jane's Addiction and Nine Inch Nails fell on decidedly opposite sides of that line. (See a photo gallery of the show here.)
