Isobel Campbell and Mark Lanegan, 'Ramblin' Man EP' (V2)

The Ramblin' Man EP offers a preview of the upcoming full-length, Ballad of the Broken Seas, from Scottish vocalist Isobel Campbell of Belle and Sebastian and ex-Screaming Trees frontman/current Queens of the Stone Age sideman Mark Lanegan. Who would guess the improbable collaboration would sound like something out of the American heartland?

The Gris Gris, 'For the Season' (Birdman)

With a name alluding to both a voodoo curse and Cajun slang for drugs, the Gris Gris' latest effort is appropriately intoxicating. The Oakland, Calif., natives -- frontman Greg Ashley, bassist Oscar Michel, and drummer Joe Haener -- offer a more experimental take on garage rock's typical stomp and swagger.

Sam Champion, 'Slow Rewind' (Razor & Tie)

Sam Champion's debut effort is a celebration of life in the slow lane. Addressing the familiar post-graduate themes of booze and empty wallets, the rock quartet revels in the simple joy of having nowhere to go. Frontman Noah Chernin delivers a laidback drawl over Pavement-inspired melodies that alternate between hazy alt-country dirges and rollicking party jams.

Josh Joplin, 'Jaywalker' (Eleven Thirty)

With starry-eyed lyrics and jangly acoustic melodies, Jaywalker would make an ideal soundtrack for a coming of age flick set in the Dust Bowl. Brooklyn resident Josh Joplin -- who previously crafted glossy ditties on the same label as the Backstreet Boys -- unpacks a collection of nostalgic narratives and guitar-driven pop on his solo debut.

On the Slide with Iron and Wine's Sam Beam

Ever wonder what college professors do outside of the classroom? Beyond the occasional run-in at the dining hall or library, most students are probably unaware of what their teachers do in their personal time. But they might be surprised--one of them just might have a record deal.
