19-year-old R&B phenom Chris Brown has spoken for the first time since last week’s incident, when he was arrested for alleged domestic violence and felony battery against his girlfriend, 20-year-old Barbados-born singer Rihanna.

“Words cannot begin to express how sorry and saddened I am over what transpired,” Brown said in a statement. “I am seeking the counseling of my pastor, my mother and other loved ones and I am committed, with God’s help, to emerging a better person.”

Brown added that “much of what has been speculated or reported on blogs and-or reported in the media is wrong.” He did not provide further details.

Meanwhile, Jay-Z, a mentor to Rihanna who said last week that Brown was a “walking dead man,” has come forward to support Rihanna, who is currently at home in Barbados.

“She’s going through a tough time,” Jay-Z said. ” You have to realize she’s very young…. It’s not a sound byte, this is a real situation. Just imagine it being your sister or mom and then think about how we should talk about that.”

Since the incident, reports have circulated that Brit songstress Leona Lewis may have had a role in Brown and Rihanna’s fight. The reports allege that Lewis and Brown flirted at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party last Saturday, which directly preceded the altercation early Sunday morning. Lewis’ spokesperson, however, said the rumors are false.

“Leona was seated with her family and long-term boyfriend Lou Al-Chamaa at a table near Rihanna and Chris at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party. Chris was introduced to Leona by Rihanna,” the spokesperson said. “She said something like ‘hello’ and they chatted for a couple of minutes. Leona… had nothing whatsoever to do with any argument that may have ensued between Chris and Rihanna. Any allegations that the pair had flirted are completely false.”
