SPIN recently named the 40 best albums of 2010, but already the candidates for 2011’s list are starting. Among them: The Decemberists’ The King is Dead, which is streaming online right now in advance of its January 18 release. Listen at NPR!

The album, which received seven out of ten stars in SPIN’s January issue, finds band leader Colin Meloy steering his crew away from 2009’s The Hazards of Love, on which “these Portland-based nerd’s nerds tragically overdosed on rock-operatic ambition,” writes SPIN reviewer Mikael Wood. “Ten crisp roots-rock tunes in a mere 40 minutes, The King Is Dead finds the Decemberists in serious course-correction mode.”
