New Black Flag Disses Other (Black) FLAG, Shares ‘Down in the Dirt’

Black Flag 'Down in the Dirt' New Song Ron Reyes

Fans of Hermosa Beach hardcore legends Black Flag were given a rare gift at the start of the year: not one but two “reunions,” though neither featuring the band’s most beloved and longest serving vocalist, the inimitable Henry Rollins. We witnessed Keith Morris’ FLAG rip through an excellent set at a Moose Lodge a couple of weeks ago, but according to the Ron Reyes-fronted Black Flag, those other guys are “mailing it in.”

The latter group — rounded out by founding guitarist Greg Ginn, drummer Gregory Moore, and touring bassist Dave Klein — has shared “Down in the Dirt,” the first song from their forthcoming 22-track album due out this summer. But the thrashy new taste came with a word of warning: “not to be confused with the ‘fake’ Flag band currently covering the songs of BLACK FLAG in an embarrassingly weak ‘mailing it in’ fashion.”

Way to keep it classy, bros. There goes our hopes of a touring triple bill featuring a third band (BLACK?) fronted by Rollins. The song below (also available as a free download from the band) was billed as “the first new song from BLACK FLAG in a generation.” Give it a click and see if it was worth the wait. Just remember, “Whoever said it’s not about having fun is full of shit.” So spake Keith Morris.
