Those who’ve followed Annie Clark’s career closely might already know that she’s not shy about busting out a cover or two as a tribute to her influences (or in celebration of her Portlandia appearances), but last night in Chicago, on tour in support of St. Vincent, her cover of choice served a more powerful purpose. Yesterday was the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s passing and St. Vincent paid tribute with a faithful, searing rendition of Nirvana’s “Lithium,” which was fortunately captured by an enterprising fan, albeit in phone-camera quality and from a distance. For comparison’s sake, and for proof that it doesn’t necessarily take great minds to think alike, you can also watch a version of the same song performed by Muse last night at Lollapalooza Brazil.
Catch our tributes to Cobain by checking out a few stories we’ve unearthed from the SPIN vaults.
