The Walkmen Score ‘How I Met Your Mother’ Swan Song

the walkmen, how i met your mother

How I Met Your Mother ended its nine-season run on March 31, finally revealing how Ted Evelyn Mosby (played by Josh Radnor) met the mother of his children, Tracy McConnell (played by Cristin Milioti). But the long-delayed meet-cute between Ted and Tracy wasn’t the series finale’s final twist (spoiler ahead, obviously): It was revealed in the program’s last few minutes that the past nine years and 208 episodes have been building to a grand romantic gesture set to a song by the Walkmen.

All right, not really. Turns out that, like many predicted/feared, the mother has been dead all along, and that all this time HIMYM has really been angling to have Ted end up with his longtime friend and often-unrequited love interest, Robin Scherbatsky (played by Cobie Smulders). It was a last-minute plot development that satisfied some and really pissed off others, and was soundtracked by “Heaven,” the outstanding, life-affirming title track from the Walkmen’s (seemingly) final album.

Watch the long, winding New York City love story of HIMYM come to a close — with help from one of the city’s finest band of romantics — on CBS.com. (“Heaven” kicks in around the 42:00 mark.) Revisit the song’s nostalgic music video below, and check out recent solo work from the Walkmen’s Hamilton Leithauser, Peter Matthew Bauer, and Walter Martin.
