Miley Cyrus Covers the Smiths and It Doesn’t Totally Suck

Miley Cyrus The Smiths There Is A Light That Never Goes Out Cover Video

Miley Cyrus’ recent affinity for big-name British bands continued Monday night at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast, Northern Ireland, with a contemplative cover of the Smiths’ “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out.” This, of course, followed her reworking of the Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” accompanied by the Flaming Lips. Above, Cyrus’ dusky vocals at first seem strange in place of Morrissey’s iconic lilt. But as she edges toward the chorus, the melodrama of the original breaks through her absurdist pop veneer, and turns the whole thing into a surprisingly celebratory affair.

You get some sense of that in the video above, but a trip over to Miley’s Instagram reveals that a portion of the rapturous fan reception was due to the fact that she decided to take a selfie video midway through the song. That strange, shorter clip is below.
