Arcade Fire and Mavis Staples Cover the Stones’ ‘The Last Time’ With Gospel Flair

Arcade Fire Mavis Staples 'The Last Time' Rolling Stones Chicago video

At this point in the Reflektor tour, the formula is basically “Arcade Fire covered _______ by local legend _______ last night in _______” with the occasional guest star thrown in to spice things up. The latest edition of the band’s tribute performances came with a bit of a twist last night in Chicago, where they enlisted the help of Mavis Staples. They started off with “This May Be The Last Time,” a traditional gospel tune that the Staples Singers recorded back in 1955, and then transitioned into the Rolling Stones’ “The Last Time,” which was credited to Mick Jagger and Keith Richards but cribs heavily from the earlier song. Arcade Fire gave the latter song a bit of garage pep, with the 75-year-old Staples stealing the show with a powerful, raspy breakdown. So, enjoy it above, unless you’re really sick of Arcade Fire covers, in which case why are you reading this?
