In 1994, the Scottish singer Edywyn Collins released his album Gorgeous George, which featured the cheesy, inescapable single “A Girl Like You.” Now, 20 years later, the Black Keys have taken to paying Collins homage by covering his jazzy song on their worldwide Turn Blue tour. In typical Keys fashion, lead singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach funks it up significantly to the point where “Girl” sounds like it could’ve been on any of the band’s most recent albums. The Ohio band’s version of “Girl Like You” is also a noticeable step up in quality from the last time a famous band — if you can call Alvin and the Chipmunks famous, and who are we to say they aren’t — covered the song a few years ago.
Stream the original “A Girl Like You” below and compare it to the Keys’ version, which is above, but it seems like Collins himself is a fan.
